Born at Torrent in Spain, she had an addiction for tennis from the beginning of her life. After many hours of training, she became a professional tennis player at 16 years old.
Anabel is traveling around the world to play tournaments almost every week of the year. She has a strong fighting spirit and she was rewarded by an amazing career achievements :
- 11 WTA tournaments victories in singles, and 7 finals
- 25 WTA tournaments victories in doubles for 2 Roland Garros (Grand Slam)
- Best singles ranking – 16 in the world
- Best doubles ranking – 3 in the world
After a long career of 16 years in singles, she decided to end it to focus on coaching and doubles at the same time.
In 2015, she started to coach Jelena Ostapenko (from Latvia, 1997) while playing doubles tournaments. In 2016, after an injury at the Wimbeldon grand Slam she decided to stop playing tournaments to focus 100% on Jelena Ostapenko.
After one year of collaboration, Jelena Ostapenko increased her ranking from 84 to 13 in the world.
But the most amazing performance from Anabel Medina Garrigues, was to coach Jelena Ostapenko (20 years old) through the Roland Garros Grand Slam Victory in 2017.
It was the first Grand Slam victory for a Latvia player.
